Its Time for a garbage study or (Waste Audit)!

A waste audit was carried out on the solid waste that would have eventually ended up as landfill.  A council garbage collection would normally collect this waste.  Liners were placed in the three 240 litre wheelie bins and a collection of one weeks garbage was studied.  This was sorted into different types of materials which were identified, counted and weighed.

Now to RETHINK what and how much rubbish we throw away….

The four rules we can follow to RESPECT the environment:

Nature knows best!

Humans cannot improve on nature but we can easily overload and cause unpleasant side effects such as pollution.

Everything is connected to everything else!

Animals, plants, air, soil and water are all related and  energy or food is shared between them.

There is no such thing as a free lunch!

All things need energy and energy costs.

Everything must go somewhere!

There is no such thing as 'throwing  things away' since matter and energy are indestructible and must go somewhere. Wastes will come back and 'haunt' the thrower.  (Commoner 1971 cited in Walker 1994)
