Melissa Kay aged 16 attends Kyogle High School and is
member of the Northern Rivers Karate Club. She currently holds a brown
belt in traditional Karate. Melissa has been training with the Kyogle
Northern Rivers Japan Karate Club for just over two years.
During March Melissa attended the National Karate Titles in Adelaide.
Competitors came from all over Australia, New Zealand and the US.
Melissa won a Silver medal in the Kumite (self defence) Competition and a
Bronze Medal in the Kata (movements).
Melissa's other recent achievements include June 2000 Qld. Titles Gold
Medal - kumite, Silver Medal - Kata and Bronze in the team Kata section.
August 2000 Melissa competed in Bundaberg winning a Silver Medal in Kumite
and a Bronze Medal in Kata. In June 2000 Melissa won two Silver Medals in
the Wide Bay Titles in Qld.
Melissa currently trains three times a week and hopes to obtain her Black
Belt in twelve months. Next year Melissa been invited to train in Japan by
Sensai Camino, a leading Japanese instructor.
The Kyogle Japan Karate Association trains on Tuesdays and Thursdays at
the Showground Pavilion from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Contact Bill Edwards on
