Editorial
"Changes in our lives"
TKN visited Boonah
recently. It’s a town similar in size to Kyogle with all the
beautification aspects already in place, including ‘traffic calming’
and ‘alfresco dining’. The local folk kicked up a bit of a fuss before
it all took place, but consensus seems to be one of acceptance now that
all the work has been done, and the locals can ‘use all the amenities’.
The footpaths were even and clean, and everything was neat and tidy. The
tourists of course, are used to such niceties, and Boonah is a very nice
place to visit. Sound familiar? Yes, of course, it’s just like Kyogle.
We were pleased however, to get back to Kyogle, where ‘Good Old
Fashioned Service’ is part of our shop keeper’s natural philosophy. By
the way, please keep those "Are You Being Served" coupons coming
in, and VOTE 1 for your favourite business, shopkeeper or assistant, this
month Colleen Hurley was nominated from Kyogle-IGA, congratulations. Great
also to welcome "Chocolate Addiction" to the main street of
Kyogle, what an addition, especially if you are a chocoholic like many of
us! We do wish April and Rob Doyle all the best in their yummy new
venture, more info inside this edition.
We feature a very hard working element of our shire, the ‘movers and
shakers’, the folk that get goods and people where they are meant to go,
quickly and efficiently. "Travelling amd Motoring Around Kyogle &
District" is our chance to showcase our local trucking, motoring and
ancillary organisations, plus all the buses that deliver TKN for us. We
take this opportunity to THANK all our TKN delivery people. Please support
your local businesses, whilst they support our local community!
TKN’s February ’54 Flood Commemorative issue, and Elaine McLean’s
article on the 1954 flood brought back memories, and many folk have their
own recollections of the ‘Great Flood’. With your anecdotes, photos
and stories, we hope to produce a booklet dedicated to the people who
fifty years ago lost their lives, with proceeds from the sale assisting
the Kyogle Historical Society. A Memorial Service is being organised, and
we will inform when plans are finalised. Many thanks to Robyn Carlill, Lyn
Hayes and Margaret Ellis who put together a wonderful display in
Kyogle-Mitre 10 front window. Many of their photos of the flood and
resulting damage will be seen in the upcoming booklet.
If you have a special story or photograph of the ’54
flood, please jot it down and pop them into Tom’s Music Shop, in Kyogle,
or send to TKN, 103a Summerland Way, Kyogle, NSW, 2474, to be included in
the booklet.
We trust you enjoy your March edition of TKN, and until
the next issue, Kind regards, Tom Rogers and Danny Hampton. |

"Where there is Hope
– there is Love"
Hope Bennett is the aptly named
Priest in Charge of the Kyogle Parish. Reverend Hope Bennett was one of
six women ordained by Bishop Keith Slater in Christ Church Cathedral,
Grafton, on Saturday February 7th
2004. This is the first time in the history of the diocese that all
ordinands were female. Two of the women went straight in as
priests-in-charge of parishes. Rev’d Hope, pictured here with Maurie
Powell (Rectors Warden), had been Assistant Deacon during the past year
and has been working towards this time and the realisation that this is
what God has wanted for her to do. Hope has already gained the love and
respect, not only from the Anglican community, but from all with whom she
has come in contact with during her ministry. Hope explained that she has
a lot of dreams and visions for the parish, and says "we are going to
have a wonderful time". She is passionate about her work, and keen to
provide an open and available place of worship for everyone. Changes to
variety and times of services which cater for the needs of people of all
ages, with strong emphasis on inspiring our young folk and providing for
the elderly, encouraging the use of Christian surroundings and services
for marriages and baptisms, are already being investigated. As
Priest-in-charge, Hope is determined that the Church will be available!
And to that end, Hope’s office in the parish hall will be up and running
very soon, so please feel welcome to talk to Hope about your concerns.
Bishop Keith will be Commissioning Hope at a special service to be held
this Saturday 6th
March in St James’ Church, beginning at 7pm. Supper will be provided in
the parish hall following the service and an open invitation to you to
attend.
World Day of Prayer Shaping The Future Together
The World Day Of Prayer is to be celebrated on Friday 5 th
March at Our Lady Of Sorrows Catholic Church, Kyogle. The time of the
service will be at 10am with the guest speaker Sister Dorothy Hogan. The
theme of the service will be "In Faith Women Shape The Future",
prepared by the women of Panama. The service is translated into more than
60 languages and 1,000 dialects, and will be used by men, women and
children in around 180 countries. You are invited to join us for this
vital global event. For further information, please contact Sr.
Monica Hogan on 66 321 049.

KYOGLE CAN DO
With Suzy Coulstons unfortunate departure, Kyogle Youth
Action has picked up the reins of the Can Do group until Council appoints
a new C.P.O.
Kyogle Can Do is an important meeting of service providers as well as
community members who are concerned with the welfare and future of our
town. The last meeting focused on Crisis Accommodation {short term} and a
brief update on where this project is at will be discussed before moving
onto the next identified project, which is a Neighbourhood Centre. There
are a lot of people interested in this service within the town and I would
hope as many as possible would attend this meeting to show their support
for the project and steer it in the direction they want.
This meeting will be held in the Kyogle Youth Centre from 10pm on Tuesday
the 2 nd

IPTASS Petition
The Nationals have launched a petition calling on the
Carr Labor Government to review the criterion country cancer patients had
to meet to access financial assistance under the NSW Isolated Patients’
Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme (IPTAAS). In order to qualify
for financial assistance in NSW, cancer patients must travel in excess of
200 kilometres one way for treatment, whereas in South Australia and
Victoria, the distance is 100 kilometres, and in Queensland it is 50
kilometres. These distance criteria are the toughest in Australia and this
inequity is simply unfair. The petition also called on the Sydney Labor
Government to give patients the chance to choose their own specialist.
Patients are currently required to see only their nearest treating
specialist. This not only restricts patients’ access to the best
available treatment but also fails to take into account that the waiting
times for the nearest specialist may be sky high. These conditions meant
rural and regional cancer patients faced an unfair financial burden and
were detrimentally affected by waiting times, varying quality of care and
an inability to participate in clinical trials. The petition for a better
deal for cancer patients in country areas had the support of a number of
cancer advocacy and support groups. I would strongly encourage people to
come into my office or call for a copy to join the State-wide push for a
fair go for country cancer patients.

VAJRADHARA GONPA
Kyogle is host to one of the major centres for Buddhism
in Australia. Vajradhara Gonpa is a peaceful mountain retreat on 800 acres
of bushland at Collins Creek near Kyogle. The "Gonpa," as it is
known locally, can accommodate up to 120 people, commands a spectacular
view of the Border Ranges and is home to a great variety of wildlife
including koalas, wallabies and platypus. Established in 1986, Vajradhara
Gonpa is under the guidance of Abbot Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, a highly
respected teacher of Tibetan Buddhism from Bhutan.
Vajradhara Gonpa is known internationally for its
beauty and excellence as a place of learning and practise. In fact, on my
trips overseas when meeting with other Buddhists, the name Kyogle is often
met with better recognition than Sydney or Melbourne! The national and
international visitors attracted by the Gonpa have brought a significant
stimulus to the local economy especially as efforts are always made to
source local goods and services wherever possible.
In recent times the Gonpa has been making the teachings
of the Buddha more widely accessible by establishing groups in Byron Bay,
Lismore and Kyogle township. Those wishing to find out more about Buddhism
or learn a simple and relaxing form of meditation can contact Sue at ACE
on 66 33 3281. To facilitate these new groups, Steve Cline has come from
Canada as full time teacher and group facilitator. Steve is highly
experienced in both the study of Buddhist philosophy and the practice of
meditation, as well as being a translator of Tibetan texts into English.
He will surely be a great asset for the region.
Our next major event at the Gonpa will be the
amazing Lam Dre Lob Shey with renowned Tibetan master H.E. Luding Khenchen
Rinpoche from May 3 to June 19. The Lam Dre outlines the entire Buddhist
path in great detail. For those who cannot attend for seven weeks, the
first section known as the ‘Triple Vision’ from May 3 to 10, is a
wonderful and complete teaching in itself. When the Lam Dre teaching was
last held at the Gonpa in 1997, people attended from 22 countries around
the world and Kyogle Mayor, Val Johnson, came to the Gonpa to officially
welcome the participants to the Shire. For all enquiries about the Gonpa’s
activities, contact Vajradhara Gonpa, phone 6633 1382 or email vajgonpa@nor.com.au

Local Aboriginal Leader Runs
For Council
Patsy Negus Walker a local leader in the
aboriginal community has decided to stand for the Kyogle council in the
forthcoming elections.
Reconciliation, families and environment are the key issues in the
upcoming council elections, according to Patsy Walker. "If a word can
change a generation of people, then reconciliation is such a word",
said Patsy. "Reconciliation is one of the items that is close to my
heart. Since the late 1930’s when famous activists like Bill Ferguson,
John Patten and William Cooper campaigned for basic civil rights for
aboriginal people, both aboriginal and non-aboriginal people have tried to
achieve the very same goals politically."
"Reconciliation is the new term, put out there by politicians and it
either became flavour of the day or leaves a bad taste in your
mouth," says Patsy. "Bridging the gaps is what we prefer to call
it, and we have been working towards it for years. Only you can choose if
you want change for the future".
Domestic violence is an issue in which she has been involved with trying
to make a difference for many years. Many youth projects have only
succeeded through Patsy’s work and support.
The third thing is the environment, with recent projects to protect local
Wetlands through the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural
Resources, and Landcare.
"We can teach it in schools and other educational institutes or
preach to the converted or we can take action on it by going out and
meeting people, putting an awareness process out there, in making a change
for what you believe in", said Patsy.

Aussie Mannings and
Calgary Mannings Swap!
Pictured alongside the good old ‘aussie barby’, and
really feeling the HEAT, is the Manning family. Now THIS family of
Mannings, Jakob, Christina, Thekla, James and Margaret are from Calgary,
Canada, and have swapped houses AND JOBS with the OTHER family of Mannings
from Kyogle, Paul and Janelle and family are in the SNOW at Calgary. James
explained to TKN that he comes from a school with 1000 students, so we
pondered how Paul was doing ‘over there’. James said that the family
was enjoying their time in Kyogle and that he was originally from a small
country town and was relishing the opportunity to work in a community.
Paul’s story from Calgary was this: "We made it to Calgary without
too many difficulties!!! It was only MINUS 2 degrees C, when we arrived,
apparently quite warm! Since then we have survived down MINUS 33 degrees
C, driving on the other side of the road, some minor language difficulties
[no I wasn’t swearing!] and the children in my class have survived one
day with the NEW Mr Manning! There is no golf until April here unless you
want to play at two INDOOR golf courses [$50 per hour] Hope to play a
number of courses in the spring – our neighbour plays and one of the
other teachers was pleased to find a new partner for the spring! What a
good story of coincidence, and we wish both families of Mannings, a great
swap for 2004.

I Want To Look After Bob – It’s my duty
Back in 1999 Bob went into hospital for heart surgery.
Since then he has been mostly bed ridden, and has not regained his former
interest in life. He doesn’t even seem to enjoy the grandchildren
visiting.
The demands on my time remind me of caring for a young
baby but without the joy. As each day passes, Bob becomes more dependant
and demanding, unlike a baby. I want to look after Bob, it’s my duty,
but I feel my very essence is somehow being drained. Sometimes I think it
would’ve been better if he hadn’t pulled through the surgery. Then I
feel very guilty for even thinking this. Vera my sister in law told me
that many carers often become ill themselves because they ‘forget’ to
attend to their own needs. She informed me of a carers support group that
meets once a month on the 3 rd
Thursday of each month between 10am and 12 noon. I think I’ll give it a
try.
Carers Support Group Meets at The Caring Circle, 9,
Stratheden Street, Kyogle. [Opposite the Memorial Hall]
This month the group will meet on March 18 th
and The Caring Circle is open every Thursday too between 10am and 3pm for
further information about support for carers. Please phone 66 321 853 and
leave a message and your number so we can return your call.

these as part of Diabetes Australia’s "Grab A Bite" promotion

Kyogle Country Music
2004 sure kicked off in a big way for our humble little
country music club following the A.G.M. and general meetings that saw 63
members in attendance it was on the show. The Kyogle Country Music Assoc.
"Slim Dusty Tribute" an estimated crowd of 250, including
visitors from Maclean, Casino, Murwillumbah, Coffs Harbour, Mullumbimby,
Lismore, Tenterfield, Coraki, Grafton and Woodenbong came along to the
Kyogle Bowling Club and enjoyed some great country music when twenty of
our local muso’s and friends paid tribute to this late great
entertainer. Following "The Tribute" many visiting artists then
performed beautifully for the crowd’s entertainment. As this was the
first outing for 2004 it was pleasing to see so many in attendance, 125
members have already paid this years membership so it appears Kyogle
Country Music will have another big year. The president and committee
welcome the many new members that have joined our club and extend an
invitation to anyone who enjoys good country music to join us at the
Kyogle Bowling Club at 2.00pm on the second Sunday of each month. Our
Country Music is not only enjoyed here in Kyogle, we visit other clubs on
a regular basis and the popularity of these trips really showed when
within 2 hours of being announced the trips to Mullumbimby and Rosewood
were almost booked out.

Yes the Tough on Drugs Community Partnerships
Initiative has just announced its successful funding applicants and KYA is
one of them.
Congratulations to Mark Garrett who has made this project a winner and who
applied for the grant. The grant will see the door cost reduced to a gold
coin donation and will further the purchase of more new tables and quality
nets. The funding is for twelve months and gives us the opportunity to
expand these nights. So we have six months to develop these nights in
preparation for the next round of funding which would hopefully see the
Kyogle community coming up with an activity that is easy to set up and
take down as well as store, that could add to the nights.
There is a constant outcry in the community that there is nothing for kids
to do, well heres a good starting point to change that.
Table Tennis will start again on the 24th
of February
Youth Week is in the planning stages and we would like to hear from young
people who would like to be involved in the planning of this year’s
events. We have some ideas as to what might improve the events but unless
we have input from the youth who benefit from these days we are just
guessing.
A planning meeting will be announced soon so keep your eyes open.
DJs needed, anyone who fancy’s themselves as a DJ or would like to learn
the fine arts needed, should contact KYA of their interest as there will
be a need during youth week for such abilities.

CASINO BEC
Small Business Column
Cash Flow Budgeting is the process where you forecast
the amount of money that will flow in and out of your business over a
given period (eg 12 months). This is a practical tool and when used
effectively, will motivate you to have tighter controls over your
operating expenses (fixed and variable), stock levels and debt collection.
If you are an existing business use historical data to
estimate your projected income and expenses. To calculate this, take an
average of 2-3 years trading figures taking seasonal trends into account.
It is always best to be cautious and allow for the unexpected to happen.
For a new business the cash flow forecast is a reality
check to help determine whether your business will be financially viable.
Do your homework thoroughly and keep your projections to a realistic and
achievable figure and include one-off set up costs.
Monitor progress - Regular comparisons of cash flow
budgets against actual business performance will help you monitor your
cash flow and make timely business decisions.
The next Women’s Sales and Marketing Workshop will be held in Kyogle
on Wednesday 10 March commencing at 9.30 a.m. Bookings essential.
The Casino BEC is supported by NSW Department of State
and Regional Development to provide a free service to existing or new
start business in the Kyogle LGA area. |

Old Bonalbo And
Thereabouts with Geoff Bateman
ted access to the Internet by children, where I
recommended taking charge of passwords, I didn’t discuss the importance
of password security, or design. Being a security measure, a password must
reflect that aspect in its makeup. Family names, birth dates, street names
and the like are out. A combination of meaningless upper and lower case
letters, numbers and symbols is the ideal. An example would be
P#$.5d.N&. As a general rule, passwords should not be less than six
keystrokes long, with the ideal being nine or ten. Once you’ve designed
your password and registered it with your service provider, ensure that
the ‘save password’ checkbox on your Internet connect window is
unchecked. To have your computer remember your password is a violation of
security, on the same level as writing a password on the top of the
monitor, so much so that you may as well not have a password. I stumbled
across the PC Magazine website the other day that offers a great selection
of freeware and shareware programs. This is a reputable site and some of
the best programs, all supposedly vetted by PC Magazine staff, are
available to download. The following address will open this box of goodies
http://shareware.pcmag.com/welcome.php?&siteID=pcmag For those looking
for light-hearted and weird photos, humour and wacky news, take a look at www.dribbleglass.com
Now for the local news – whilst landowners and gardeners across the
region have welcomed recent rains, storms have caused some damage to
houses, roads and fencing. In fact it would be accurate to say that
loggers from NSW Forests are rank amateurs compared to the destructive
force of nature and locals will not need to fall trees for firewood or the
odd fencepost for quite some time. There is a bridge currently under
construction on the outskirts of Old Bonalbo with traffic being diverted
on a side road. Heavy rain plus a fast running and swollen creek was more
than sufficient to destroy the side road, sweeping steel culverts and
several tonnes of earth and rock away without very much effort at all.
With the Clarence Way cut, school students, teachers and hospital staff
are just a few of the folk affected. Couriers, milk tankers, cattle trucks
and essential goods carriers are all forced to make detours via Kyogle,
effectively adding up to 200 km to the trip. The attached photo of Georg
Vancsa standing next to the twisted steel culverts gives some idea of the
destructive force of even relatively minor floodwaters. Advice straight
from Cr Ernie Bennett, Mayor of Kyogle Shire reveals that within two days
of the water dropping to a manageable level, the side road will be
replaced. Now, this is a surprisingly straight answer from a politician
and that worries me. He may mean it. Speaking of Council, it looks as
though up and coming Local Government elections in our Shire will pass
almost unnoticed. The good oil has it that A and B wards have only the
required number of candidates to fill vacancies and it is only C ward
where at this time there is a total of four candidates for the three
Councillor positions. With Cr Bill Thomson not standing, the candidates
are; our current Mayor Ernie Bennett, Cr Lindsay Passfield, and newcomers
Ian Kirkpatrick of Bonalbo and Len Roser of Tunglebung. It’s a terrible
pity that Kyogle Council candidates are not corrupt, for a bit of vote
buying, a couple of free Bar-B-Qs, some underhanded promises and a bit of
active mud slinging, all add spice to an otherwise dull exercise. All
jokes aside, it appears that Kyogle Council will gain fresh blood along
with new ideas and views, without the expense and kerfuffle of Shire-wide
elections. There is definitely a boon to being viewed as less politically
desirable than Lismore or Byron Councils.
I hear that Mallanganee village will soon boast a new
café/coffee shop. With our (normally) balmy weather and relaxed living
style, this café has the potential to be a decided asset and magnetic
attraction to tourists and locals alike. Success of course, will depend
largely on the skill of the proprietor and his/her ability to produce a
decent cup of coffee, and I don’t mean plastic cappuccino. A good Vienna
is a better heart-starter than a defibrillator With one or two exceptions,
Vienna coffee in the Lismore and surrounding towns is an unsavoury
concoction, muddy in colour, with a flavour of something resembling
charcoal and rusty nails, topped with a spiralling mass of pressure pack
cream substance that slowly sinks into the coffee, resulting in a saucer
full of frothy muck. Mousetraps aside, make a decent cup of coffee and the
world will beat a path to your door.
I hear that Bonalbo Development Association is close to
resolving the unsatisfactory situation regarding the maintenance and
cleaning of the public toilets located at Norman Johnston Park. These
particular toilets gained some unwelcome but fairy accurate publicity
recently where, in a letter to the Northern Star, a tourist stated that
they were the worst she had seen in her extensive travels. Kyogle Council
is somewhat belatedly contributing a quantity of graffiti removal liquid
to assist association members in a refurbishment project of this public
convenience, maintenance of which should rightly be the responsibility of
Council. Bonalbo Development Association has also joined surrounding
villages in entering into an agreement with Council where, in return for
an agreed amount of money and some equipment, the Association takes
responsibility for maintenance and upkeep of certain grounds and assets
within Bonalbo town limits. This is a good deal that works well in at
least two villages that I know of, allowing residents to take charge and
make decisions that affect the beautification of their village.
Last but not least – the ongoing saga of the dreaded mobile phone
tower proposed for Haystack mountain continues. Some readers may recall
that last December, I rather sceptically reported an expected completion
date of this coming March. It would appear that my scepticism was well
founded because as a result of objections, counter proposals, calls for
compensation and another high-powered meeting, completion of the tower is
not expected now prior to sometime in June. As I indicated last time – I’ll
believe it when I see it. Geoff Bateman OAM

Wiangaree Red Cross
Members of the Wiangaree Branch of
Red Cross are delighted with the success of the Sausage Sizzle and Euchre
Tournament Night recently held at the home of Harold and Gloria Wilton. An
attendance of thirty-three players ensured some keen competitive playing,
the over-all winners of the night being Col Graham and Vera Beck (from a
cut-off of five ladies). A number of folk attended the Sausage Sizzle but
did not stay to play cards, while a few people travelled out from Kyogle
to enjoy the night’s entertainment. Branch members wish to thank Harold
and Gloria for their generosity in opening their home for these events,
and are planning on holding another such night soon.

recent assistance in providing me with a Computer for use in my voluntary
community work. The computer was built from donated recycled computers as
practical experience and training in the Work for the Dole Defragit

My Unsung Hero.
Hero: a man who is admired for his brave or noble deeds (The Oxford
Dictionary)
Whenever we read newspaper
headlines about a hero, we immediately think of someone who has put his
life at risk to help another. My Unsung Hero has had his life ‘at risk’
since the moment he first drew breath on a cold winter day on 29th July,
1966. Born in the Kyogle Maternity Hospital in Campbell Street Kyogle,
Darryl Green was not given any chance of survival. After four critical
days he was transferred to St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital in
Brisbane, where he remained for the next six weeks, fighting what was
thought to be a losing battle for life. It was then that his parents
Laurie and Anne, decided that they wanted him at home where they could
personally care for their fragile little son. Darryl was fed from a glass
tube with a teat on one end and a syringe on the other, Mum and Dad taking
it in turns to feed him, day and night, each ‘bottle’ taking from one
to two hours in every three to administer. He beat the odds then - and he
is still beating the odds almost thirty-eight years later.
Thanks to the persuasive encouragement of Mr Allen Campton
(Teacher-in-Charge of The Risk school), Darryl started school when he was
four-and-a-half, continuing through at this school until he was fifteen. I
was appointed as assistant teacher
there when Darryl was about eight and was richly blessed to have him in my
care for eight months. His uncomplaining acceptance of his condition,
Pradar Willi Syndrome and severe asthma, his happy smile and cheerful
"Good morning Mrs Fardon. Isn’t it a lovely day?", his
generosity and loving nature with adults and children all endeared Darryl
to those of us with whom he had daily contact. I well remember the morning
he slipped on a sheet of paper in the classroom, unable to get up, even
with my assistance. I was desperate; Darryl simply said, "Leave me
alone for a few minutes and I’ll work it out." Strangely, I
believed him and my confidence was rewarded when he quietly used a couple
of chairs and the table to get himself mobile again. In the short time I
taught him, he learnt to not only write and read, but to write stories and
letters, using his own personal everyday vocabulary. His pride in his
accomplishments was equalled by my pride in his achievements.
When he was fifteen Darryl attended Lismore’s Challenge Foundation,
thence to Casino’s On Focus - based on the ‘sheltered workshop’
system. Darryl loves his work, hating to miss going even when he is too
sick to get out of bed. Seven years ago the doctors gave him twenty-four
hours to live; but, to use his own words, his "Aunty Fay (Reeves)
told him to go back as it wasn’t time for him to come yet!" One of
his greatest mates is Dr Das, who has gone beyond professional care in his
love for Darryl. Darryl has been awarded a number of TAFE Achievement
Certificates for Literacy and Numeracy in recent years and he delights in
broadcasting on COW FM once a fortnight. He is absolutely rapt in music
and his young nephew Nathaniel with
equal passion. It is unusual to see Darryl without his Bermuda Triangle
‘signature-cap’ and he and young Nathaniel even sport these in bed!
Laurie and Anne moved from the farm to the Golf Course Estate some five or
six years ago to make it easier for Darryl to travel to Casino, a move
which he accepted as his due, something which he would do in kind for
those he loves with such simplicity and faith. Darryl loves helping
people, anyone he sees in need. I hope that, in reading this tribute, he
will know just how much he, my Unsung hero, has helped me to accept
whatever comes along, and to smile when things go wrong, to know that, in
some part, he is ‘the wind beneath my wings!’!
Following this great story from Fay
Fardon regarding her "Unsung Hero" Darryl Green, we here at TKN
ask you to also jot down YOUR own "Unsung Hero". Simply pop a
photo and story into Tom’s Music Shop, Summerland Way Kyogle |
